My Smart Nail Science Lab
Let's teach the computer about fingernails!
1. The Problem
Can a computer recognise a fingernail in a photograph?
People recognise nails quickly, but light, shadows, skin colour and reflections can confuse computer rules.
2. Our Idea
We take careful finger pictures, let computer vision find the finger, and show the computer the correct nail area.
3. Camera and Computer Vision
Computer Vision helps a computer understand things inside pictures.
4. Image Processing
Changing a picture can make shapes and borders easier to find.
5. Teaching AI
Every nail marking is a correct example. Training means showing an AI many examples so it can learn patterns.
Why doesn't Student Mode automatically find the nail?
Because we are currently creating the examples that will teach the AI what a nail looks like. The student's marking is the correct answer, called ground truth.
Ground Truth: The correct answer provided by a person for an AI training example.
6. Our Experiment
Question: Can colour and shape rules find a fingernail?
Observation: Sometimes they worked. Sometimes lighting and skin reflections confused them.
Conclusion: The unexpected results helped us decide to collect labelled examples for a future AI experiment.
7. Future Measurement
An object looks larger close to a camera and smaller farther away. Before measuring millimetres, we need a known-size reference.
Calibration helps change pixels into real measurements. No millimetre result is being claimed yet.
8. What We Learned
Science includes testing ideas, studying failures, collecting evidence, and improving the next experiment.
